Detroit Waza Flo Wins Loudly

December 29, 2013 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
Waza Flo News Release

It was a great night to end the 2013 half of the season. With a packed house, and support by soccer fans The Northern Guard, who brought drums and spirit, the Melvindale Arena was rocking.

The teams were pumped up and had a strong defensive battle in the first quarter ending with no goals. As we came into the second, Mike Grba scored a goal at 3:46, which started a flurry of scoring from Byrd, Sampson (2), Bowman and Lopes to end the first half at 6-1 WAZA.

An intense battle ensued through the second half of the game. Sampson fought for two more goals in the third, one being an acrobatic kick behind him past the Cincy keeper and the other an unassisted charge down the field after a blocked penalty shot at the opposite end. It was 8-2 after three quarters.

Physical contact really increased in the fourth, with 7 penalties being issued. FLO Keeper Joey Kapinos was run into several times and found himself in a few heated exchanges. That just served to pump Joey up as he assisted on two goals late in the fourth to Scicluna and Djokic. By the end of the game, it was so loud in the arena and the drums were pounding, that it echoed the adrenaline on the field as Waza doubled up Cincinnati 12-6 for the final.

Though the tone of the game was positive and upbeat, coach Dominic Scicluna stated that the message to his team was much more stern at the start. "I had a very serious talk about my disappointment in losing four games this season. I stressed that everyone needed to go out and do their jobs. Go do the best you can. And we did. And I think the energy and electricity that the crowd brought assisted in our win could be the turning point of our season. Our winning streak starts now."

It was a good team effort with goals by eight players; Sampson (4), Bowman (2) and one each by Scicluna, Grba, Djokic, Lopes, Polack and Byrd.

The next home game is Sunday January 5th vs Illinois Piasa at 3:05 p.m. The arena is located at 4300 S Dearborn St, Melvindale, MI.
