Detroit Waza Flo rose to the occasion Sunday at Cleveland in the battle for 2nd Place in the PASL Eastern Division. Their win was their 5th in a row, and the team seems to be clicking on all cylinders, as they get ready for the post season.

Detroit opened up 1st quarter with two goals off the foot of Zane Polack, and a goal with 7 seconds left by Zach Wilkes to take a 3-0 lead into the 2nd quarter. The Freeze's Jordan scored just 2:47 into the final quarter to give Cleveland their first lead in the match. Detroit's Darrel Quinn tied the game, and Drew Ducker fired in a shot off the crossbar to give Waza Flo the advantage once again. Niki Djokic added an empty-net goal to give Detroit a two-goal cushion with just 1:44 remaining, but Bartulovic scored quickly for Cleveland to give them a chance but it was Detroit who came out on top 8-7 at the final whistle.

Cleveland's leading scorer, Allen Eller, was held scoreless but did tally three assists in the losing effort. Djokic and Djerisilo earned assists to accompany their goals and Detroit keeper Joey Kapinos also earned an assist while stopping 25 of the 32 shots he faced.

PASL Newsletter "Player of the Week"

Joe Kapinos, Detroit Waza Flo

"The second year goalkeeper phenom had to battle through this season after cruising to a 13-1 rookie season. Kapinos came up clutch this weekend in back-to-back one goal road wins at Cincinnati and Cleveland, propelling the Waza Flo into second place in the Eastern Division and earning a first round bye. The 24-year old improved to 10-4 on the season." Cleveland Freeze defender/assistant coach Louis Kastelic was impressed with Kapinos. "Both teams played well," Kastelic said. "We just ran into a real hot goaltender."

Head coach/forward Dominic Scicluna planned for the 2 intense road games. "We trained and prepared all week on how we were going to handle the back to back games, and the guys did what we asked. The games were very intense, and have helped to boost everyone's attitude heading into playoffs."

Detroit Waza Flo will play their season finale vs Illinois Piasa at home in the Melvindale Arena Saturday, February 22nd kickoff at 7:35pm.

Playoff Game: Detroit Waza Flo will host the winner of Cleveland vs Cincinnati at home in the Melvindale Arena on March 8th vying for the opportunity to compete in the PASL Ron Newman National Championship Cup in Chicago on March 15th & 16th.
