Waza Flo News Release
(Detroit, MI) After a heartbreaking defeat last week against the Cincinnati Kings, Detroit WAZA snapped back to a decisive 11-6 victory over the Ohio Vortex tonight at the Taylor Sportsplex. After a 2-2 tie at the end of the first quarter, WAZA returned to the turf determined to secure a win and never looked back.
"I thought we played well tonight and had good variety in our shots. In the first quarter, we had to test the goal keeper and in the balance of the match, we did a much better job of it.", said WAZA head coach, Costea Decu. "We went into this game fully believing that we could win."
Decu opened the second period nailing a strike to the net at 1:44 to start WAZA's advance. He extended Detroit's lead to a 4-2 advantage less than seven minutes later. Scotty Wright rounded out the period to end the first half 5-2.
The Vortex charged back into the game early in the second half, to bring the score to 5-4 but WAZA was relentless. Striking back to close the quarter with three additional goals, Ryan Mack found net, Costea Decu brought his tally to four for the game, followed by a goal from Darrel Quinn. Detroit is now up 8-4 going into the fourth period. Aaron Byrd, PASL's Player of the Week for week 12, made his presence known by scoring the first of his three goals seconds into the quarter. Ohio answered back with two, bringing the score to 9 - 6. Yet Byrd's hat trick wasn't complete. He added the final two goals to win the match 11-6.
"We came out with a great win today. With this being our last home game of the season, the crowd, our fans, were especially important to us. There was tremendous positive energy here tonight. We were not losing this game, no matter what. This game was for them." expressed Decu.
With this victory, Detroit clinched a playoff berth in the Ron Newman Cup Playoffs.
The Detroit WAZA FLO will be hitting the road for a double header next weekend. They will play the Illinois Piasa on Saturday, February 11th, at the Sports Academy in Glen Carbon, 8:35 pm start time and the Kansas Magic on Sunday, February 12th, at the Epic Indoor Sports Arena, 4:05 pm kick off.
