Detroit Shock News Release

Auburn Hills, MI - Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and Detroit Shock All-Star Forward Swin Cash announced this evening that the pair have joined forces to promote Oakland County's Count Your Steps Program for 2006. The announcement came at Patterson's annual state of the county address at the Michigan State University Management Education Center in Troy.

The purpose of the Count Your Steps program is to increase physical activity in children. Pedometers are being provided to third and fourth graders in Oakland County in an effort to encourage behavior change with fun activities.

"The Count Your Steps program has done exactly what we wanted it to do for at least one month during the year," said Patterson. "Got the kids off the couch, away from their video games and outside for some healthy exercise. This year, we are delighted to add a little glamour to the program as Swin Cash, the dynamic leader of the champion Detroit Shock, has agreed to be our athletic sponsor for Count Your Steps."

"Physical fitness is a key component of the WNBA's and the Detroit Shock's community service platform," added Cash, "and the goals and messaging behind the Count Your Steps program are a perfect fit for us. I'm looking forward to counting my steps right alongside the 29,000 Oakland County third and fourth graders that are taking part in this year's program."

Count Your Steps will run from March 6th - March 31st, 2006, to encourage students to count their steps and increase their physical activity levels. After the contest, students will be encouraged to participate in the Count Your Steps - Year Long Challenge, to win additional prizes. Registration for the four-week program began on January 17.
