Detroit Pistons Assign Cheikh Samb to Fort Wayne Mad Ants

The Detroit Pistons announced yesterday that they have assigned rookie center Cheikh Samb to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, their NBA D-League affiliate. Samb is the first NBA player to be assigned to the Mad Ants.

Drafted by the Lakers with the 51st pick in the second round of the 2006 NBA Draft, Samb was acquired by the Pistons on draft day from the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Maurice Evans on June 28, 2006. The 7-foot-1, 215-pound center made his NBA debut with the Pistons on November 16, scoring two points with four rebounds and two blocks in 15 minutes. In two games this season, Samb is averaging 1.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 10.5 minutes per game.

Samb, a native of the country of Senegal, played his first year of professional basketball with WTC Cornella in the Spanish LEB2 league. In the 2005-2006, he averaged 9.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, and shot 51.4% from the field. In his second season with WTC Cornella he averaged 10.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.9 blocks while shooting 52% from the field.

Samb is expected to make his debut this Thursday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum as the Mad Ants take on the Dakota Wizards. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. To make Samb feel right at home, the Mad Ants will be celebrating their long relationship with the Pistons by hosting Pistons night in Fort Wayne. The Mad Ants will also be taking on the Dakota Wizards the next night, Friday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m.
