Detroit City FC News Release
DETROIT - After a three-game road trip, Detroit City FC returns home to Keyworth Stadium this Saturday to face defending USL Championship champions Phoenix Rising FC. Kickoff is set for 5 PM EDT and will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
Detroit City comes into this matchup from an exhilarating US Open Cup match on Tuesday. Le Rouge advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating MLS side and defending US Open Cup champions Houston Dynamo FC 10-9 on penalties. Goals from Ryan Williams, Yazeed Matthews, and Maxi Rodriguez brought Detroit level with Houston, sending the game to extra time. Penalties would decide who would advance after no goals in the 30 minutes. It would take 11 rounds, and goalkeeper Carlos Saldaña's penalty conversion would send Detroit to the Round of 16 for the first time in club history.
Detroit will travel for the Round of 16 matchup, facing off against USL Championship rival Indy Eleven on May 22.
After drawing 0-0 with Loudoun United last weekend, goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for week 9. Steinwascher's four-save clean sheet in constant rain helped Le Rouge earn a point on the road.
The defending USL Championship champions, Phoenix Rising FC, have had a challenging start to their title defense. Rising currently sits sixth in the Western Conference with a record of 3-4-2. Phoenix drew at home against Sacramento Republic FC 1-1 in their most recent league game.
Phoenix Rising played in a Round of 32 Open Cup match on Wednesday on the road against North Carolina FC. A 111th-minute goal from Giulio Doratiotto put Phoenix up 2-1, which would be the final score. This victory marks the first time in the club's history that they have advanced to the Round of 16.
For Detroit to succeed in this matchup, they must prevent Rémi Cabral from scoring. Cabral has six goals this season and is tied for third in the USL Championship.
These two sides faced off only once last year. It was a night to forget for Le Rouge in Phoenix. After conceding in first-half stoppage time, Phoenix added four goals to their tally in the second half to walk away with a 5-0 victory.
