Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, OH â The Columbus Destroyers of the Arena Football League signed offensive specialist Randall Lane from the club's practice squad, the team announced today. Lane will be in uniform when the Destroyers travel to Grand Rapids to face the Rampage at Van Andel Arena Sunday afternoon.
Lane, who spent the first four weeks of the season on the practice squad, joined the Destroyers as a free agent after spending one season as a member of the arenafootball2's Green Bay Blizzard. Lane, limited to only eight games because of a knee injury, caught 61 passes for 1,144 yards and 24 touchdowns with Green Bay before being named to the All-af2 National Conference Second Team. His per-game average of 143 total yards led the league. Lane also spent time with the Peoria Pirates of arenafootball2 prior to joining Green Bay. Before entering af2, Lane had a brief stint with the NFL's Arizona Cardinals (2000), however suffered foot injury during training camp.
Prior to entering the professional ranks, Lane enjoyed a successful collegiate career at Purdue University. As a junior at Purdue in 1998, Lane set the Big Ten Conference record for pass receptions in a single game (18, for 178 yards) at Wisconsin. He held the record for one year until teammate Chris Daniels hauled in 21 passes against Michigan State in 1999. Lane's 18-catch game still ranks as the second-highest single-game total in Big Ten history. In two seasons with the Boilermakers, Lane caught 114 passes for 1,570 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging 13.8 yards per catch. Lane was a First-Team junior college All-American in 1997 with 69 receptions for 1,200 yards (17.4 per catch) and 14 touchdowns for Los Angeles Valley Junior College
The Destroyers return to the field this Sunday, February 27 when the team travels to Grand Rapids to face the Rampage at Van Andel Arena. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. Following two consecutive road games, Columbus returns home to host the Las Vegas Gladiators on Saturday, March 12 at Nationwide Arena. Prior to the game, members of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will be on hand to sign autographs prior to a special on-field performance at halftime of the game.
