Columbus Destroyers News Release

COLUMBUS, OH – The Columbus Destroyers selected former Cincinnati Bengals lineman Norris McCleary with the fourth overall pick in Thursday's (Oct. 14) Arena Football League Dispersal Draft.

McCleary (6-5, 305, East Carolina) was selected from the roster of the now-defunct Carolina Cobras. McCleary is entering his first season in the Arena Football League after stints with three NFL teams. He originally signed as a free agent with Carolina before being placed on the team's exempt list after signing with the Bengals.

He originally signed with the Kansas City Chiefs following the 2000 NFL Draft. He played in three games during his rookie campaign, recording two solo tackles, before seeing action in 10 contests for Kansas City in 2001, posting seven tackles, including one for a loss. The Chiefs then allocated McCleary to NFL Europe in the spring of 2002 where he earned First Team All-League honors with the Frankfort Galaxy. He also spent time in training camp with the Seattle Seahawks prior to joining the Bengals this year.

In all, the draft included 29 players who remained under contract with the Cobras, Indiana Firebirds, and Detroit Fury. All three teams ceased operations following the 2004 season.
