Destroyers make roster moves

April 1, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Columbus Destroyers News Release

COLUMBUS, OH – The Arena Football League's Columbus Destroyers have placed quarterback Ryan Vena and wide receiver/defensive back Lenzie Jackson on injured reserve and signed quarterback Scott McMullen and wide receiver/linebacker Chris Curd off the club's practice squad. Both McMullen and Curd will be in uniform for Sunday's nationally televised game between the Destroyers and Philadelphia Soul at Nationwide Arena. Game time on NBC is set for 12 p.m. (ET).

Vena has appeared in three games for the Destroyers this season, making two starts and completing 55-of-89 passes for 728 yards and 11 touchdowns. In six games, Jackson has six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing 10 total tackles and two pass deflections defensively. Per league rule, both Vena and Jackson will be sidelined for a minimum of two weeks.

McMullen (6-3, 215, Ohio State) spent the first nine weeks of the season as a practice squad player after signing with the Destroyers this past offseason. He joined the team after a successful collegiate career at The Ohio State University. He began his career at OSU as a red-shirted freshman in 1999 before seeing his first action the following season. He would go on to appear in 20 games, making three starts between 2000-03. McMullen finished his career having completed 87-of-141 passes for 1,103 yards and nine touchdowns. His 65.4 completion percentage as a senior was tops among all Buckeye quarterbacks.

Curd, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, is in his rookie season in the AFL after spending a portion of this year's training camp with the Georgia Force. Prior to entering the AFL, Curd (6-3, 220, Pittsburgh) spent time in training camp with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons (2004) after signing with the club as a rookie free agent.

Curd should be well-suited for the Arena game, having played on both sides of the ball while playing at the University of Pittsburgh. He began his collegiate career as a defensive back, however moved to wide receiver his senior year. He finished his senior campaign with three catches for 22 yards and was a standout performer on special teams for the Panthers.

In other personnel moves, the Destroyers have signed quarterback Tommy Jones and wide receiver/defensive back Jason Waters to the practice squad. Jones (6-4, 230, Indiana) enters his first season in the AFL after stints with the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals and Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. Waters (5-11, 190, Tennessee) joins the Destroyers and the AFL after spending time with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and Barcelona Dragons of NFL Europe.

Tickets for all remaining Destroyers home games are priced as low as $11 and are on sale now at the Nationwide Arena Ticket Office, at all Ticketmaster Ticket Centers, online at ticketmaster.com or by phone at (614) 431-3600.
