PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Columbus Destroyers, presented by GermainCars.com, fell to the Philadelphia Soul on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center by a final score of 47-35. With the loss, the Destroyers drop to 0-6 on the season. Quarterback Grant Russell completed 19 of his 32 passes for 267 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions, while rushing for another score, while wide receiver Tony Stevens had his best game in a Destroyer uniform, catching five passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
The Soul got the scoring started thanks to a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive back James Romain, giving the Soul an early 6-0 lead. The Destroyers responded on their next drive when Russell found wide receiver Tony Stevens for a 43-yard gain down to the one-yard line. On the next play, defensive lineman Nick Seither took a hand-off and plunged into the end zone from one yard out to give Columbus their first lead of the night, 7-6. The Soul answered with a score of their own to jump back in front, 13-7, as quarterback Dan Raudabaugh found wide receiver Lonnie Outlaw for a 15-yard scoring play.
In the second quarter, the Soul extended their lead off another interception of Russell. Raudabaugh this time connected with wide receiver Darius Prince for a 24-yard strike to give Philadelphia a 19-7 lead. Russell bounced back on the ensuing possession, finding Stevens for a nine-yard touchdown, trimming the Soul's lead to 19-14. The Destroyers caught some good fortune at the end of the first half, as Philadelphia kicker Kenny Spencer missed a 25-yard field goal as time expired.
The Soul opened the scoring in the second half as Raudabaugh found wide receiver B.J. Bunn for a 20-yard touchdown, extending Philadelphia's lead to 26-14. After a fumble by Columbus gave the ball back to the Soul, Raudabaugh cashed in again by finding Bunn for another quick six, this time from 31 yards out to further extend the Philadelphia lead to 33-14.
In the fourth, Russell found wide receiver Paul Browning for a one-yard touchdown strike thanks to a lucky tip from a defender. Kicker Craig Peterson's extra point cut into the Soul's lead, making the score 33-21. Philadelphia quickly answered as Raudabaugh found Prince for his second touchdown of the night, this one from 32 yards out, to push the Soul lead back out to 40-21. The Destroyers didn't go away as Russell found Stevens for his second touchdown reception of the night, this one from nine yards out to trim the Philadelphia lead to 40-27. After the ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Soul, Raudabaugh found offensive lineman Keith Newell for a four-yard touchdown, to increase their lead to 47-27. On the next possession for Columbus, Russell pulled it down and ran it in himself from 18 yards out to close the scoring for the evening, giving the Soul a 47-35 home victory.
