Soul Snap Three-Game Losing Streak with Win over Columbus
June 1, 2019 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Philadelphia Soul News Release
Despite its recent struggles, the Soul secondary gave the team an early advantage, as defensive back James Romain recorded his third pick-six of the season on Columbus' opening drive. It was the first of three turnovers forced by the defense on Saturday night.
The Soul recorded another interception in the second quarter, this time by Defensive Player of the Game Torez Jones, who finished with the pick, 8.5 tackles and a forced fumble. Despite two missed extra points and a missed field goal, the Soul took a 19-14 lead into the half, snapping a streak of eight straight games in which the team had trailed entering the third quarter.
Philadelphia began to pull away in the third, outscoring Columbus 14-0 behind two BJ Bunn touchdowns. Replacing an injured Aaron Wascha, Bunn caught 5 passes for 94 yards and both third-quarter scores. Meanwhile, a Jones' forced fumble recovered by Darius "Money" Reynolds kept the Destroyers out of the end zone.
Midway through the fourth quarter, quarterback Dan Raudabaugh found offensive lineman Keith Newell who lumbered into the end zone for the insurance score to put the Soul up 20. Raudabaugh finished 15-of-26 for 260 yards and six touchdowns in the win.
The Soul will host the Washington Valor in the second game of a three-game homestand next Sunday at 4 pm. Philadelphia will be looking to avenge its Week 4 loss at Washington, after falling 53-46 at Capital One Arena.
