Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Destroyers have acquired quarterback Matt Nagy from the Georgia Force in exchange for offensive/defensive lineman Mike Sutton, Head Coach Doug Kay announced today.
Nagy (6-2, 220, Delaware) will be entering his sixth season in the AFL in 2007. In 2006, he set Force franchise-passing records for yardage (7,268), attempts (960), completions (632) and touchdowns (151) in his second season with the team. Last season he proved to be the most efficient quarterback in the Arena Football League as he led all passers with a 125.5 rating.
"We understood at the end of last season that we needed to take a look at all positions to see where we could improve," Kay said. "When the opportunity for Matt to come to Columbus arose, I felt like it would be in our best interest."
In 2005, Nagy led the Force to its first National Conference title and a berth in Arena Bowl XIX, as well as being named All-Arena Second Team.
As a starter for the Force the last two seasons, he has garnered an overall record of 18-14 including a 3-2 mark in the playoffs. Before setting franchise marks in Georgia, Nagy spent the 2004 season with the Carolina Cobras and began his AFL career with the New York Dragons in 2002.
After prepping at Manheim Central (PA) High School, Nagy set over 20 career passing records at the University of Delaware from 1997-2000. Among those records are attempts (895), completions (502), yards (8,214) and touchdowns (58). He joins a long list of Delaware graduates who have spent time as a signal caller in professional football: Scott Brunner (NY Giants), Jeff Komlo (Detroit Lions), Rich Gannon (Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders) and Sean Salisbury (Minnesota Vikings).
Sutton (6-4, 285, Louisiana State) started all 16 games for the Destroyers this past season. In four seasons in the AFL, he has compiled 51.5 tackles, six tackles for a loss of yardage, four sacks, four forced fumbles and one interception in 46 games played.
The Destroyers begin the road to ArenaBowl XXI in 2007 after a record setting season in 2006. The team is now accepting season ticket deposits from new customers for the 2007 season. Information regarding single game tickets will become available when the 2007 schedule is released this fall. For more information please call (614) 246-HITS.
