Destroyers Academy Going Strong In 2nd Season

(BUFFALO, NY)- The Buffalo Destroyers reading program Destroyers Academy is in full swing for a second year and began in Western New York schools Friday, November 1. The program will run through January 31, 2003.
"The Buffalo Destroyers are looking forward to the second year of combining reading, education and professional sports in our community," said Destroyers owner and CEO Mark Hamister. "Education is key to the future of our community. The Destroyers are proud to be a part of encouraging our children to expand their reading experiences.
Over 300 schools in Buffalo and the Southern Tier are eligible for the Destroyers Academy this academic year. In its first season, the Destroyers Academy sent over 1,300 students from 38 schools to a Destroyers game after successfully completing the program.
Students are challenged to read two books a month reaching a total of six upon the completion of the program. Each student completing the Destroyers Academy will receive a ticket voucher to a Buffalo Destroyers home game. Participating schools will have each classroom teacher monitor the program and each student's progress. Vouchers are good for any of the eight Destroyers home games this season.
A teacher with 15 or more students enrolled in the program will receive two tickets to a game. The school with the highest enrollment will receive a computer and schools with 200 or more students enrolled in the program may opt to hold an assembly with Destroyers players, coaches, staff, mascot and cheerleaders in attendance.
"Any program that provides incentives for children to read books has my support," said New York State Senator Byron W. Brown. "The Buffalo Destroyers have challenged our region's children to read more, thus helping them to ensure future academic success.
Buffalo kicks off its fifth season in the Arena Football League on February 1, 2003 at the HSBC Arena as the Destroyers host the Grand Rapids Rampage at 7 p.m. Season and group tickets are on sale now. Call 881-4444 today!
