San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas--- Despite San Angelo's 6-3 loss to Rio Grande Valley (38-40) on Saturday night, the Colts (47-31) still had reason to celebrate. A 6-4 victory for the Edinburg Roadrunners atop the Amarillo Dillas nailed down the number one seed for San Angelo heading into the playoffs. The second, third, and fourth place spot in the United League is yet to be determined. There are two games remaining in the regular season.
For the second consecutive night, good starting position and a productive Rio Grande Valley line-up has been too much for the Colts. The WhiteWings drove their win-streak to three games defeating San Angelo 6-3 at Foster Field.
The visiting team got on the board in the top of the third. Agustin Septimo collected his first homerun of the season against Colts starter Chandler Barnard. The switch-hitting Septimo lifted a fly ball over the left-field wall to carry a 1-0 WhiteWings lead.
As the Colts offense continued to struggle, Rio Grande Valley pushed on in the fifth. Jose Torres RBI single scored Rico Santana from Third base. A fielders choice from Sandy DeLeon brought home Juan Cabrera extending the Wings lead to three.
After a 15-inning scoring drought, the Colts got on the board in the seventh. The inning began with a Jason Landreth double, a Jose Torres throwing error moved Landreth to third. John Anderson's ground ball to second base scored Landreth. The score stood 3-1 in favor of the WhiteWings.
Three consecutive singles in the top of the eighth inning, which plated another Rio Grande Valley run, moved the WhiteWings advantage back to three.
San Angelo responded in the bottom half. After a Ronnie Gaines Single, Hunter Jobes dropped a drag bunt for a hit. The attempted put-out by starting pitcher Jose Cordero resulted in a throwing error scoring Gaines and placing Jobes at third. A two-out RBI single from Selwyn Langaigne sent Jobes to home plate and brought the Colts within a run.
The WhiteWings offensive out-put continued in the ninth. RBI singles by Juan Melo and Rico Santana created a 6-3 Rio Grande Valley lead.
The bottom of the ninth mirrored last nights completion. Wings closer Julio Santana slammed the door on San Angelo's attempted comeback. The Colts trail in the series two games to none.
Wings starter Jose Cordero (2-1) accepted the win completing 7 and 2/3 innings of work. The right hander allowed two runs while striking out eight. Chandler Barnard (9-5) took the loss. The Lubbock native allowed three runs over six innings, striking out six. Julio Santana earned his eighteenth save.
San Angelo and Rio Grande Valley will continue their four game series tomorrow at Foster Field. Sunday's promotion will be Back to School Kits sponsored by Texas 211. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm, gates will open at 4:05. The Kemps pre-game show will begin at 6:50 pm.
