Arizona Sting News Release

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Arizona Sting forward Jonas Derks has been named the National Lacrosse League's Offensive and Overall Player of the Week for Week #2 of the season. Against the Toronto Rock on Saturday, Derks scored four goals and added four assists for eight points in Arizona's 14-13 win over the defending champs. Head Coach/General Manager Bob Hamley was very pleased with Derks' performance in Arizona's season opener.

"Jonas was fabulous Saturday," said Hamley. "Not only did he score, but scored at crucial times in the game. This is a well-deserved honor for Jonas."

The 5'9", 180lb. native of Whitby, Ontario amassed 40 points (18G-22A) for the Sting last season after being acquired through a trade with Buffalo on February 1, 2005. In 82 career games, Derks has registered 132G-114A-246P as a member of the Baltimore Thunder, New York Saints, Buffalo Bandits, and Arizona Sting. This is the 32-year old veteran's first time winning a Player of the Week award.

In other NLL news, Colorado Mammoth goaltender Chris Levis has been named Defensive Player of the Week for his superb performance in a 12-11 win over the Rochester Knighthawks. San Jose Stealth forward Jeff Zywicki earned Rookie of the Week honors after scoring three goals, including the overtime game winner, in a 10-9 road win over the Edmonton Rush.

Derks and his teammates will look to continue their strong play this Friday, January 13, when the Sting play host the expansion Portland Lumberjax at the Glendale Arena. Game time is 7:30 PM.
