Denver Cutthroats Sweep Oakley Weekly Awards
Published on March 17, 2014 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
GLENDALE, AZ (March 17, 2014) - The Central Hockey League announced today that the Denver Cutthroats have swept the Oakley Player and Goaltender of the Week Awards for the period ending March 16, 2014. Forward Vincent Arseneau has been named the week's top skater and goaltender John Griggs has been named the week's top goalie (the second time this season and in the last three weeks that he was won the weekly honor).
In recognition of their achievements, Arseneau and Griggs will each receive a special gift from Oakley. To learn more about all of Oakley's products, visit www.oakley.com.
The Cutthroats had an extremely busy week playing five games in seven days but they persevered winning all five contests all part of an overall nine-game win streak (one shy of the longest in the CHL this season, Rapid City - 10 straight wins to start the season). Denver will look to tie that mark on Wednesday in Arizona.
Arseneau was a huge part of the Cutthroats success scoring goals in four of their five games and finishing with six strikes (including two game winning goals) and two assists. Arseneau's game winners came on Monday and Wednesday in road wins at Brampton and Quad City. On Friday, the rookie notched his second pro hat trick (first came on Oct. 30 vs. Brampton).
The Iles-de-la-Made, Quebec native is third among all rookies in scoring with 23 goals and sixth in points with 34 in 41 games played. His +13 plus/minus rating is second among all first-year players and his goals on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday were all a part of his eight-game goal scoring streak (longest in the CHL this season).
Griggs has had a remarkable start to his pro career winning each of his first nine starts with the Cutthroats. Last week, the Barrington, Illinois native went 5-0 allowing 15 goals in big wins in Brampton and Quad City and then home to Quad City on Friday and Saturday and Sunday against Allen. Both Saturday's and Sunday's wins came via the shootout for Griggs who on the week stopped 159 of 174 shots (.914 save percentage).
The rookie is unbeaten in nine games on the season and if he qualified for the league leaders, his numbers with the Fish would be tops with a 2.38 goals against average and .927 save percentage.
