Delmonico Named All-Star Game MVP

Salisbury, Md. - On Tuesday night in Charleston, South Carolina at the 53rd annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game, Shorebirds infielder Nicky Delmonico anchored the Northern Division's 3-2 win over the Southern Division and was named the MVP of the game. Delmonico went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Delmonico is the second Shorebirds player in franchise history to win the All-Star Game MVP. Trey Salinas was named the 2002 SAL All-Star Game MVP. Former South Atlantic League All-Star Game MVP's include: Ryne Sandberg (1979), Don Mattingly (1980), Josh Hamilton (2000), B.J. Upton (2003) and Delmon Young (2004).

After striking out in his first at-bat, Delmonico singled in the fifth inning. He came into score the Northern Division's first run on a double by Kannapolis' Kevan Smith. In the seventh inning, Delmonico doubled to right field and later scored on a single by Hickory's Hanser Alberto. He reached base on an error in his final at-bat in the ninth inning.

Delmonico finished with two of the six hits for the Northern Division team.

Nine Northern Division pitchers combined to limit the Southern Division team to just seven hits and two runs. The Southern Division team rallied with two runs in the ninth inning, but fell short.

Delmonico had a superb first half of the year for the Shorebirds. In his first professional season, he batted .262 with 19 doubles, six home runs and 43 RBI's. Delmonico led the Shorebirds in hits (62), doubles (19), home runs (6), RBIs (43), total bases (99) and games played (65). Delmonico ranks tied for sixth in the South Atlantic League in doubles and 12th in the SAL in RBIs.

The sixth round selection in 2011 leads all Orioles minor leaguers in doubles and RBIs.

The Shorebirds open the second half of the year on the road against the Kannapolis Intimidators on Thursday, June 21 at 7:05pm.
