
Delaware Smash Selects Andra Stevenson

Wilmington, Del. (April 3, 2002) -Alexandra Stevenson was selected by the Delaware Smash today in the first round of the World TeamTennis (WTT) Marquee Player Draft.
Stevenson is enjoying a resurgent season on the WTA Tour in 2002. She currently ranks a career best #24 in women's singles and reached her first career tournament finals against 2001 WTT Female MVP Lisa Raymond in Memphis. Earlier this season, Stevenson upset Jennifer Capriati in the second round at Sydney and recently battled into the fourth rounds at Indian Wells and Miami.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for Delaware, as we look to build a winning team around her," said team General Manager, Dan Kegelman. "I'm thrilled that Alexandra will play for the team. Her magnetic personality will make her very popular with our fans."
In 1999 Stevenson became the first woman qualifier to reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon and was named Tennis Magazine's rookie of the year. Stevenson is currently coached by her mother, Samantha Stevenson and lists her role model as Margaret Court.
The remainder of the Smash roster will be chosen in the Roster Player Draft on April 10 and their season schedule will be released in late April. Possible marquee players making a visit to Delaware include John McEnroe, James Blake, and Amanda Coetzer.

Billie Jean King and Larry King originated World TeamTennis and its unique gender-equity team concept in the early 70s'. Since its inception, some of tennis' greatest names have played in the League, including Venus and Serena Williams, Monica Seles, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. The format features teams comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Each match consists of five sets, with one set each of men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles.
