
Delaware Smash Selects 2003 Team Roster

Wilmington, Del. (April 2, 2003) âLiezel Huber was selected by the Delaware Smash today in the first round of the World TeamTennis (WTT) Roster Player Draft. The core of the 2002 Smash Team that finished the season strong with six straight home wins return to the Smash this season.
American star Paul Goldstein from nearby Rockville, Maryland is a former Davis Cup player and four time All-American at Stanford University. Goldstein has wins over Patrick Rafter, James Blake and Greg Rusedski. Recently, Goldstein reached the Men's Doubles Finals at the 2003 Siebel Open with partner Robert Kendrick.
Returning Smash player and WTT 2002 Female Rookie of the Year, Samantha Reeves, has reached the quarterfinals or better in six WTA Tour events and is ranked among the Top 100 singles and doubles players in the world and is considered a rising star on the WTA Tour. Reeves, along with her partner Milagros Sequera, recently defeated the 6th ranked team of Elena Bovina and Rennae Stubbs(4) 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in Women's Doublesat the Nasdaq-100 Open.
In 2003, Liezel Huber will be entering her fourth season in the WTT League. Huber currently resides in Houston, Texas. Huber's best shot is her forehand. She is the winner of four WTA doubles titles. One of her current doubles partners on the Tour is Martina Navratilova. Huber and Navratilova reached the doubles semi-finals in Los Angeles in 2002. Huber reached the doubles semi-finals of Wimbledon in 1999.
The team is anchored by doubles specialist, Scott Humphries. Humphries was named WTT 2002 Male Rookie of the Year. Humphries reached the 2001 Australian Open doubles semifinals with partner Justin Gimelstob. Humphries has also partnered up with Jan-Michael Gambill. In 2002, Humphries led the Smash on a season ending 8-6 win/loss record. Humphries' lethal poaches and dominant net play made the Humphries/Goldstein duo a force to be reckoned with in the WTT. One of the rising American stars, Andy Roddick, is scheduled to make a visit to Delaware this July. Roddick has captured two ATP titles. He is presently a member of the U.S. Davis Cup Team. Smash fans will be more than entertained by the young man whose personal best serve reached the 144 mph mark. Most recently Roddick reached the semifinals in the Australian Open.
Tennis legend Boris Becker was also selected to make a visit to Delaware this summer. Becker, who will be playing for the New York Buzz, will be making his WTT Pro League debut. Becker was a member of the German Davis Cup Team. In 1985, Becker was the youngest player at 17 years 7 months old to ever win Wimbledon. He has impressive wins over Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Becker holds over 40 career titles.

Billie Jean King and Larry King originated World TeamTennis and its unique gender-equity team concept in the early 70s'. Since its inception, some of tennis' greatest names have played in the League, including Venus and Serena Williams, Monica Seles, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. The format features teams comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Each match consists of five sets, with one set each of men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles.
