Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, the proud ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League and Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League, has agreed to contract terms with defenseman Luis Tremblay (Trehm-BLAY, LOO-ee) and rookie left wing Chris Myhro (MIGH-roh), Thunder head coach Matt Thomas announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
The contracts mark the third defenseman and the fourth forward to join the Thunder roster for 2009-10.
"Luis is an experienced point-producing defenseman who brings an offensive upside and is very hard to play against defensively," said Thomas. "Adding his ability to create offense from the blueline and a big shot from the point are important elements to upgrade our power play and overall defensive unit."
Said Thomas of Myhro, "Chris is a skilled player who comes highly-recommended through various contacts based on his offensive potential and ability to score. We're expecting him to strengthen our offensive depth. He has a good nose for the net and his quick shot makes him a threat from in close."
Tremblay, 26, makes Stockton his fifth ECHL stop after previously skating in 198 career games throughout three seasons (2004-07) with the Bakersfield Condors, Wheeling Nailers, Texas Wildcatters and Trenton Titans, scoring 69 points (22g-47a), 22 goals and adding 356 penalty minutes. In 18 career Kelly Cup Playoff games with Bakersfield and Wheeling, the 6-foot-1, 192-pound blueliner has recorded seven points (2g-5a) and two goals.
In his second pro season, Tremblay's offensive progress in 2005-06 placed him fourth in ECHL goal-scoring among defensemen (14), while reaching career-highs in goals and points (30) in 71 games for Wheeling. In April, Tremblay was awarded the HOK Sport ECHL Plus Performer of the Month award with a league-leading +7 rating.
The native of Val d'Or, Quebec spent the previous two seasons (2007-09) with St. Hyacinthe of the Quebec Nord-Americaine de Hockey League (LNAH), skating in 78 games while scoring 38 points (5g-33a) and amassing 225 penalty minutes.
Tremblay spent four years (2000-04) of his junior hockey career with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), skating in 251 career games while posting 91 points (27g-64a) and 457 penalty minutes.
"Stockton was my first choice when Coach Thomas called me," said Tremblay. "It's a highly-recommended environment through conversations I've had with two former teammates in Brendon Hodge and Tim Verbeek, who used to play here. I wanted to come back to an ECHL team that plays in a city where hockey is important. Stockton shows it, the fans lead the league in attendance and the players are treated well."
Myhro, 24, enters his first season of professional hockey after three seasons in college with the University of Connecticut (NCAA), where he skated in 87 career games for the Huskies while scoring 65 points (36g-29a) and amassing 90 penalty minutes.
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound forward enjoyed a college career-high 31 points (20g-11a) and 20 goals in 34 games for UConn as a 2006-07 sophomore and ranked second in program scoring and third in the Atlantic Hockey conference with 27 points (13g-14) in 35 games as a 2005-06 freshman.
Myhro scored four points (1g-3a) and collected six penalty minutes in three games last year for EK Zell am See of the Austrian League.
"It will be my first time playing on the west coast, so entering a new environment that Stockton provides with the fans, arena and front office makes me very excited for this year," said Myhro. "I've heard a lot of great things about Coach Thomas, the community and the award-winning organization, so it makes you excited as a player to be a part of that for a 72-game schedule."
The Thunder returns to the ice for preseason play on Thursday, Oct. 8 against the Bakersfield Condors, starting at 7:00 p.m. at Stockton Arena. The 2009-10 season, the fifth-year anniversary for the team, launches on Friday, Oct. 16 at Qwest Arena against the Idaho Steelheads at 6:10 p.m. and the Thunder home opener is Friday, Oct. 23 against the Ontario Reign at 7:30 p.m. at Stockton Arena.
The Thunder was voted "Best Local Sports Team" by readers of the San Joaquin Magazine, has led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons and drew 223,854 fans to Stockton Arena in 2008-09. Season Tickets for 2009-10 are on sale now.
