Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), announced today the signing of veteran defenseman Travis Smith.

The Saskatchewan native has spent the majority of his seven year professional career with the now-defunct Roanoke Express of the ECHL. After four years at the University of Denver, Smith joined the Express in the 1997-98 season, where he remained until the 2002-03 season, at which time he went onto play for the Greensboro Generals, where he ultimately played in just one game. At the end of the 2003-04 season, he returned to Roanoke and played in 16 games for the Express. Smith received call-ups to the American Hockey League (AHL) twice, first in the 1998-99 season, and again in the 2000-01 season. The 6-foot, 200-pound D-man still resides in Roanoke with his family.

"Travis will serve as a good leader and teacher for the younger guys that we've signed on defense," said Vipers Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Jim Wiley. "Not only that, but we will look to Travis to help acclimate the new guys to the area."

A longtime fan-favorite in Roanoke, Smith scored 82 points (20 goals, 62 assists) over six seasons with the Express, also putting up 455 penalty minutes.

Travis Smith's career stats are included with this release.
