Defenders Survive San Antonio Challenge

Lucky Jackson's 52-yard reception early in the first quarter set the Defenders up for the first score of the ball game - a 5-yard touchdown catch by Ethan Wolf. D.C. led 8-0 after a 2-point conversion catch by Josh Hammond. San Antonio drove the ball down to the D.C. 8-yard line on the next drive but were unable to score on 3rd and 6 and opted for the field goal - Parker Romo converted on 26-yard field goal and the score was now 8-6.

On the ensuing kickoff, Pooka Williams returned the ball 79 yards to set D.C. up for a Matt McCrane field goal from the 2-yard line. At the end of 1, D.C. led 11-3.

After forcing a punt to start the 2nd quarter, the Defenders capitalized on a 70-yard reception by Chris Blair and pushed the lead to 19-3 after an Alex Ellis touchdown reception from the 1-yard line and the 2-point conversion catch by Brandon Smith.

Late in the 2nd quarter, Jordan Ta'amu was picked off and the ball was returned 34 yards to the D.C. 44-yard line. A 37 yard catch on 3rd down by Landon Akers set up the Brahmas for their first touchdown of the game - a 1 yard run by Jacques Patrick. San Antonio converted on the 2-point attempt. At the Half the score was 19-11.

San Antonio got on the board first in the 2nd half with a 28-yard field goal - the Brahmas narrowed the lead to 19-14, with 8:14 to go in the 3rd quarter. The Defenders answered quickly with a 49-yard field goal from Matt McCrane and pushed the lead to 22-14.

Just before the end of the 3rd quarter, Jonathan Hilliman punched in a 1-yard touchdown, that capped off a 9-play 75-yard drive. The 2-point attempt was no good and the score moved to 22-20 entering the 4th quarter. On the next drive, San Antonio earned their second takeaway of the day and took over possession at their own 37-yard line. On 3rd and goal, the Brahmas took their first lead of the game after a 2-yard score by Jacques Patrick. After the 2-point conversion, San Antoino took a 6 point lead with 5:15 left in the game.

Jordan Ta'amu led the Defenders back down field and entered the endzone to tie the ball game at 28-28 with his 4-yard rush. Ta'amu kept it himself for the 1-point attempt and the Defenders regained the lead with 2:32 left in the game.

San Antonio drove the ball down past midfield on their final drive but was unable to convert on a 53-yard attempt on 4th and 5 with 37 seconds left. The Defenders went on to win the game by a score of 29-28.
