Second Half Gets away from Vipers in Season Finale Loss

The Vegas Vipers (2-8, 0-6) fell in the last game of the XFL's regular season, losing 28- 9 to the Seattle Sea Dragons on Sunday at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington.

Both defenses shined in the first half, as only one touchdown was scored between the two teams. Seattle got on the board with 1:16 left in the second quarter.

The Sea Dragons opened the second half with a score and converted their two-point attempt, extending their lead to 14-0.

The Vipers got on the board midway through the third quarter when Sam Sloman nailed a 53-yard field goal.

Seattle added another score in the fourth quarter, including the two-point conversion.

Vegas posted its only touchdown of the day with 1:33 left in the game. Recent signee Shai McKenzie ran the ball in from the one-yard line. This came one play after Jalan McClendon found Matt Sexton for an 84-yard pitch and catch. The 84-yard play was the longest play from scrimmage for Vegas during the 2023 season.

McClendon finished the game 6-of-21 for 201 yards and threw one interception. John Lovett led the rushing attack, posting 30 yards on seven carries. Sexton caught two passes for 119 yards to lead all receivers in the game.

Defensively, Keylon Kennedy led the Vipers with nine tackles and he forced a fumble.

Marwin Evans and Jamar Summers each recorded an interception in the game and both finished with five total tackles.

With the victory, Seattle finished the season with the same record as the St. Louis Battlehawks. The Sea Dragons have advanced to the North Division Championship game by way of the fifth tiebreaker, according to the XFL, by having a better combined ranking amongst all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games. Seattle finished fourth in the league in points for with 243 points and first in the league in points against with 177.

St. Louis finished second in points for with 249 points but was fifth in points against with 202, giving Seattle the tiebreaker.
