Defender Josh Morton Joins Roughnecks
March 16, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
The Tulsa Roughnecks FC have made another addition to their 2018 roster. The team has agreed to terms with defender Josh Morton, pending league and federation approval. The rookie comes to Tulsa after spending the last four years playing for the University of California.
"Josh is a very talented and dynamic defender who can play center back as well as right back," said TRFC Head Coach David Vaudreuil. "With his versatility and all around high level of play, we had recommended him to the Chicago Fire who selected him in the 2018 MLS Superdraft."
Morton started nearly every game during his collegiate career, making 63 starts in 65 appearances. The defender finished his career at Cal with two goals and three assists and earned an honorable mention to the All-Pac-12 list after his senior season. He also played alongside former Roughneck Christian Thierjung in college.
His success at Cal led him to be drafted by the Chicago Fire in the fourth round of the 2018 MLS Superdraft. Chicago never signed Morton which paved the way for him to start his professional career in Tulsa.
Morton played in the San Jose Earthquakes Academy for three years while he was in high school.
The Roughnecks kick off the 2018 regular season on Saturday evening when they will travel down the turnpike to face Oklahoma City in the first edition of this year's Black Gold Derby. The home opener will be one week later, on March 24, when the Roughnecks host the Real Monarchs SLC at ONEOK Field.
