Defender Cat Whitehill and goalkeeper Jami Kranich to return to Boston in 2015

HANOVER, Mass. (Nov. 18, 2014) - The Boston Breakers announced today the club has exercised the options on defender Cat Whitehill and goalkeeper Jami Kranich for the 2015 NWSL season. Per team and league policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Whitehill, 32, returns for her fourth season in Boston. She played the most minutes on the team last year (2,101), starting all 24 games, while registering one assist. In 2013, she played and started all 22 games, logging a team-high 1,978 minutes. Whitehill scored one goal and tallied two assists. Her goal, the first of her NWSL career, came July 27, 2013, in a 5-2 win at Washington.

A two-year captain, Whitehill debuted with the Breakers in 2012, playing in WPSL Elite. She started 13 of the 14 games she appeared in and ranked third on the team in minutes played (1,190).

Prior to coming to Boston, Whitehill played three years in Women's Professional Soccer, two with the Washington Freedom and one with the Atlanta Beat. In three WPS seasons, She played a combined 59 games and 5,304 minutes and had four goals and four assists. With the U.S. Women's National Team, Whitehill won a goal medal with at the 2004 Olympics.

A native of Birmingham, Ala., Whitehill won two NCAA national championships and the 2003 MAC Hermann Trophy, playing at the University of North Carolina.

Kranich, 22, returns for a second season. Boston's fourth-round pick (No. 32 overall) in the 2014 NWSL College Draft, the former Villanova University star backed up starter Alyssa Naeher.

The former Villanova star keeper did not appear in a match last season. She impressed during preseason, making her debut against the University of Connecticut, where she recorded a shutout in Boston's 4-0 win.

A native of Hamden, Conn., Kranich was a member of the U.S. U-20 Women's National Team that won the U-20 FIFA Women's World Cup in 2012 in Japan.
