August 25, 2002 - NBA G League (G League)
Roanoke Dazzle News Release

ROANOKE, Va., August 25, 2002 – The Roanoke Dazzle will hold open auditions to select the members of the 2002-03 Star City Squad, the interactive cheer/dance team that performs at the Dazzle's National Basketball Development League home games.

The auditions are scheduled Saturday, September 7, at the Humanities Building Gymnasium at Virginia Western Community College (3096 Colonial Avenue SW) in Roanoke. Auditions are free, and open to male and female performers age 18 and older. Registration is scheduled at 9 a.m.

Participants will be vying for 10 Star City Squad positions. Those judged as top candidates on Day One of the tryouts will be invited back for a second session on Sunday, September 8, at 10 a.m. Participants should be dressed in dance wear and gym shoes.

The high-energy Star City Squad is an important ingredient in the Dazzle's popular game-night experience. Selections to the Star City Squad will be based upon a combination of dance and gymnastics ability, cheerleading energy, charisma and a personal interview.

The 25-game Dazzle home schedule includes two televised appearances on ESPN2. In addition to performing at Dazzle home games at the Roanoke Civic Center, the Star City Squad also will make selected appearances in the Roanoke Valley area during the second season for the NBDL, which is the NBA's minor league.

Interested candidates may call the Dazzle at (540) 266-1001 to pre-register, or for more information.

The Dazzle will open its second NBDL season at the Roanoke Civic Center on Friday, November 15, with a 7 p.m. tipoff against the Huntsville Flight.

Nine NBDL players and two head coaches have been called up to the NBA since November 2001, and five executives have moved from NBDL teams to positions with major league organizations. Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the NBDL serves as a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 29 teams. The NBDL is a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
