Roanoke Dazzle News Release

Roanoke Dazzle guard and Virginia graduate Curtis Staples showed the University of Maryland that he didn't mind "Going Back to School," in Roanoke's 81-72 win over the Terrapins on Tuesday night. Staples led the team in scoring with a game-high 20 points, going 6-for-11 from the three-point line and 7- for-13 from the field.

Staples is no stranger to Head Coach Gary Williams. He is the NCAA's all-time leading three-point shooter and Williams remembers him well during Staples four-year career at Virginia.

"I remember Curtis very well from Virginia," Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams said. "He has always been a great shooter."

After a rough start, Roanoke turned the game around with 11:05 left in the second half when the team tied the game at 57 on Mikki Moore's foul shot. The Dazzle took its first lead as Moore sank the second free throw, 58-57. Roanoke would lead for good.

Rookie point guard Marque Perry hit two three's before Moore was fouled to get the Dazzle back in the game. Perry finished the game with 11 points and five assists. Roanoke outscored the Terrapins 51-34 in the second half, after Maryland began the game with 10 straight points and carried a 38-30 lead into the half.

"The first fifteen minutes were rough for us," Head Coach Kent Davison said. "We had no offense, we were anxious and we played as individuals and not a team. That is why we had 17 turnovers in the first half."

NBDL Defensive Player of the Year Mikki Moore finished strong in the second half after a slow start. He sank three baskets before fouling out at the 2:29 mark. He finished the game with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

"Mikki's tough defense and key shots were important for us down the stretch," Davison said. "We played all 11 guys, everyone contributed something that got us over the hump and enabled us to win the game."

Roanoke was 23-for- 29 from the free throw line, something that the Dazzle has struggled with in the past. Roanoke's win gives the NBDL its first victory on the "Going Back to School" tour.

Maryland's leading scorer was Senior Jamar Smith with 19 points. Point guard John Gilchrist finished behind Smith with 16.
