Dazzle Assistant Coach Gets NBA Summer Spot
July 18, 2002 - NBA G League (G League)
Roanoke Dazzle News Release
ROANOKE, Va., July 18, 2002 â Roanoke Dazzle Assistant Coach Harold Ellis has been chosen to work with the coaching staff of the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers during the team's eight days of competition in the Rocky Mountain Revue.
The Revue, based in Salt Lake City, is the NBA Summer League home of nine clubs. Play is scheduled July 19-27, with the tipoff a live ESPN telecast of the Trail Blazers-Jazz game on Friday night (7 p.m. ET).
Ellis has been working as an instructor and assistant coach with 16 rookies and free agents in Portland's summer camp drills for the past week. Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Memphis, Phoenix Toronto and host Utah join Portland in the Revue.
Ellis, 31, landed the Trail Blazers' summer stint following an interview in early June at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago. Portland Head Coach Mo Cheeks was an assistant coach at Quad Cities of the CBA when Ellis made the move from that team to the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers during the 1993-94 season. Dan Panaggio, then the Quad Cities head coach, is now a Trail Blazers' assistant.
Ellis, an Atlanta native, played three seasons for the Clippers and Denver Nuggets.
"This is what you work for, to get your foot in the door," Ellis said. "When I took the job with the NBDL and the Dazzle last summer, my goal was to make it back to the NBA again. The best way to do that is through our league, and then getting the chance to show what you can do. I appreciate Portland giving me an opportunity."
