DAYTONA BEACH, Fla—The Daytona Cubs may have fallen of the race in the East, but that doesn't mean the "boys in blue" aren't going to head out in style.

Following a frustrating 4-3 loss is the series finale against Vero Beach on Tuesday where the Cubs stranded a season-high 15 base runners, Daytona left no stones unturned Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark against the Jupiter Hammerheads.

Led by the white-hot bat of third baseman Scott Moore who turned in a 4-for-4 performance with a homerun, double and two runs scored, the Cubs went on to stroke 17 runs on 21 hits and belt a season-high five homeruns as they cruised to the 17-5 victory in the series opener.

Cubs starter Anderson Tavarez pitched just the first three innings of the contest as the righty surrendered three earned runs on six hits, but the Daytona ‘pen stepped in to pick up the slack long enough for the Daytona bats to heat up. Cubs reliever Nate Sevier (1-0) tossed three innings of one-hit shutout ball to notch his first victory of the season, and the right-hander got a week's worth of offensive support from his teammates at the plate.

Daytona recorded three four-run innings in the first, sixth and eighth frames. The Cubs also slammed three consecutive homers in the eighth inning as newcomer Matt Creighton, Enrique Cruz and Brian each went yard for back-to-back-to-back jacks to put an exclamation point on the hit parade.

With the win, the Cubs soared right back to the .500 mark at 28-28, as the Hammerheads dropped to 32-26 and fell 2.5 games back in the Eastern Division behind Vero Beach who beat the Palm Beach Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium 3-2.

Both teams will go head-to-head for Game 2 on Thursday with an All-Star pitching match up on the mound. The Cubs will send standout southpaw Sean Marshall (4-3, 1.83) to the rubber to face off against Hammerheads righty James Russ (6-1, 3.88). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. EST.
