Dawgz vs. Iron Game Preview

July 21, 2009 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz News Release

The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz (7-8) take on the Iowa Barnstormers (11-4) Saturday, July 25, in the final game of the regular season for both teams. Kickoff is set for 7:05 pm at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA. Oklahoma City has the only victory in the series, which is coincidentally Head Coach Sparky McEwen's first win as the Dawgz Head Coach last season.

The Yard Dawgz are coming off a bye week and look to finish off the regular season with a win and move to 8-8 on the year. The Dawgz are also looking to gain momentum as the league begins the 2009 playoffs next week. The Barnstormers are riding a 4-game win streak into Saturday's matchup with the latest clinching the Midwest Division and locking up a top three seed in the American Conference.

"This will be a great chance to get a feel for what to expect in the playoffs," commented Head Coach Sparky McEwen. "They're the Midwest Division champs and the game will be in front of a hostile crowd. It should be a real test for us."

Iowa boasts the leagues fifth best scoring defense (47.7 ppg) and will prove a tough matchup for the Dawgz, who own the seventh ranked scoring offense (58.2 ppg). Perhaps the most dangerous element of the Barnstormers squad is in their return game. Iowa has returned a league best 10 kickoffs for touchdowns behind stud returner Tim Dodge, who is also tied for an af2 best 7 kickoff returns for TDs. Oklahoma City is sure to make their kickoff coverage a priority this week, after giving up two TDs in their most recent loss to the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings (10-5). However, the Dawgz are sure to take advantage of the Barnstormers 24th ranked total defense (310.3 ypg), as Oklahoma City ranks in the top five in the af2 in fourteen offensive categories.
