Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs News Release
LITTLE FALLS, NY Darn those Sox.
That's what the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs have been saying all season about their rivals from Utica, having only won two games against them all season.
With the Blue Sox riding a three-game winning streak, keeping that number at two on Thursday seemed almost a certainty. But, as Joe Garagiola once said, baseball is a funny game.
The Diamond Dawgs battled back from three errors and a three-run deficit, riding a five-run fifth to an 8-5 victory over their Route 5 rivals.
The game was scoreless until the top of the second, when Eddie Javier (Bergenfield, NJ/Coppin State) brought home Angel DiFederico (New Haven, IN/Valparaiso) with a bases-loaded single to center. Ryan Enos (Oriskany, NY/SUNY Oswego) would do Javier one better, with a 2-RBI double to center field as well.
That 3-0 lead would stay that way until the bottom of the fourth, when back-to-back home runs by Evan Berta (Yorktown Heights, NY/Fairfield) and Rob Taylor (Wolcott, CT/New Haven) tied up the score. Berta's home run was of the two-run variety, scoring Tyler Cannon (Clayton, NJ/Iona) as well.
Taylor would pick up two more RBIs in the fifth, on a 2-RBI single that would score Matt Venuto (Mansfield, MA/Fairfield) and Cannon. Not to be outdone, Vincenzo Castronovo (Utica, NY/Bryant) would celebrate his birthday by looping a ball to right field that would score Taylor and Berta. Castronovo would come home himself on a double play ball later on in the inning.
Luis DeLeon (Providence, RI /North Carolina Central) managed to get the Blue Sox back within three in the seventh on a ball that scooted by the glove of the Mohawk Valley fielder to score Enos and Javier.
That would be all Mohawk Valley closer Terry Murray (Norfolk, MA/Rhode Island College) would need, only allowing one baserunner over the last two innings to give the Diamond Dawgs their third straight win.
Jack Anderson (Ontario, Canada/Hofstra) got the win for Mohawk Valley (18-17), while Murray picked up the save. Ryan Figueroa (Chandler, AZ/South Mountain CC) picked up the loss for Utica (20-15), who sees their own three-game winning streak end.
The Blue Sox will continue their road trip on Friday at Damaschke Field when they will visit the Oneonta Outlaws. Mohawk Valley will also be on the road Friday at Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds to play the Watertown Rapids.
