San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

The San Diego Surf Dawgs (1-1) recorded their first win of the season tonight in Yuma with a 7-3 victory over the Scorpions (1-1) in front of 2,164 fans at Desert Sun Stadium. Aaron Wilson (1-0) picked up the victory in relief while Scorpions starting pitcher Walt Nolen (0-1) was saddled with the loss.

Both Chris George and Walt Nolen looked good in the early going shutting out the opposing team for the first three innings. Second basemen Adam Mandel would lead off San Diego's half of the fourth with a single. Shortstop Tony Garcia would ground out to the pitcher but advance Mandel to second on the play. After Scott Goodman flew out, Seth Pietsch would drive in Mandel with a single to left field for his fourth RBI of the young season. After three-and-a-half innings it was 1-0 Surf Dawgs.

Yuma would come back and take the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Chris George got Calderon to ground out to start off the inning but then surrendered back-to-back singles to Malone and Lebron putting runners on the corners with one out. George then walked designated hitter Jason Dewey to load the bases. The next batter, Hector Tena, also walked, allowing Malone to score and tie the game at one. With the bases still loaded Rich Quihuis-Bell would ground out but drive in a run to make it 2-1 Scorpions. George would walk the next batter to once again load the bases but get out of the inning with only the two runs.

George's teammates would pick him up in the top of the fifth when Adam Mandel, 3-for-5 on the night, drove in Matthew Connolly to tie the game at two. The game wouldn't remain tied for long because in the bottom half of the fifth Yuma retook the lead 3-2 on a fielder's choice by Malone that scored Lopez from third. After the fielder's choice by Malone, Aaron Wilson would come in for George, who pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

Wilson came in and was lights-out; striking out five and only allowing one hit in 2 1/3 innings of work. The Surf Dawgs offense would do the rest, taking the lead right back in the sixth inning. After Seth Pietsch was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning, Nick Guerra tripled to right field to score Pietsch to make it 3-3. Matt Wheatland would strikeout to make it one out with Guerra on third. Rob Riley would come in to face catcher Kevin Reinking and would be greeted with an RBI single to put San Diego back on top 4-3.

The Dawgs would go on to score three more in the seventh, two of them on Scott Goodman's first home run of the season, to seal the deal. E.J. Shanks would relieve Wilson in the seventh and throw 1 1/3 innings of hitless ball. Josh Rummonds would come on in the ninth in a non-save situation to close it out for San Diego.

San Diego's three-four-five hitters would drive in a combined five of the seven Surf Dawgs runs in the game. Nick Guerra and Scott Goodman drove in two-a-piece and Seth Pietsch drove in one.

Tomorrow's match up features Dawgs newcomer Brent Pourciau and the Scorpions Chris Langlois. First pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m. PST.
