Flyers break in season with 7-2 loss at Chico

(Chico, CA) After sitting in the Cal State Fullerton parking lot for 4 hours on Thursday waiting for the new team bus to arrive, the Flyers then headed north for their 10 hour journey through the heart of California.

The Flyers opened the season with a 7-2 loss to the Chico Outlaws before an opening night crowd of 3,257. After Wheel of Fortune host and GBL investor Pat Sajak threw out the first pitch, the Chico Outlaws jumped on Flyers's starter Wes Faust for 3 runs in the bottom of the first. Faust gave up 2 hits in the first, but hit two batters, as well.

Faust settled down before being lifted in the 4th inning. Jeff Groeger pitched 2 and 1/3 innings, striking out 5 Outlaws, but gave up 3 runs, 2 on his own throwing error to first.

The Flyers began to wake up in the 8th inning, as Matt Ferrara doubled down the left field line. Center fielder Garry Templeton II was hit by a pitch, and then Ferrara provided the Flyers biggest highlight by scoring from second base on a wild pitch by Chico reliever Robert Anaya. Peanut Williams then singled home Templeton.

Orange County's Chad Chap (Tustin High School) led the Flyers with a pair of singles, while Chico first baseman Desi Wilson (2005 GBL Batting champion) and right fielder Jason Van Meetren eached had three hits.

The Flyers continue their first road trip of the 2006 season in Chico on Saturday night at 7:05, with Chris Jakubauskas getting the start for the Flyers versus Chico's Brian Kroll.
