San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
One night after pounding Reno for 16 runs and 17 hits, the Surf Dawgs offense went dry as they only scratched out six hits and were shut out by the Reno Silver Sox 2-0. Chris Marini (6-4) of the Silver Sox was masterful, going six innings with five hits and seven strikeouts. Scott Schneider closed out the ninth with his 16th save. Aaron Wilson (2-3) pitched well again, but gave up two runs in the fifth which was the downfall of the Surf Dawgs.
In the fifth, Doug Gredvig was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Mike Done singled to left. A sharp shot by Philip Grau to shortstop Tony Garcia was kept in the infield on a dive, but ricocheted away which allowed Gredvig to score. A sacrifice bunt moved Grau and Done to second and third. Demond Smith brought Grau in on a sacrifice fly.
The Dawgs best chance to score was in the third inning. With one out, Jeremy McCann, the only Surf Dawg to get two hits on the night, doubled. With two outs and McCann on second, Tony Garcia walked. Nick Guerra singled to left field. McCann dashed for home but was thrown out in a relay from shortstop CJ Lang.
San Diego (14-16) looks to win the series tomorrow when they take on the Silver Sox (15-15) for the first and only scheduled doubleheader on the home portion of the Surf Dawgs schedule. The first game will start at 1:05 p.m. PT at Tony Gwynn Stadium and will be immediately followed by a 3:45 afternoon game. The Surf Dawgs really need to win both to hold out hope for a championship berth.
