Orange County Flyers News Release

In a battle for the second half title, the Chico Outlaws and the Fullerton Flyers went to the 9th inning in a scoreless tie at Goodwin Field. Jesse Kovacs took a bases loaded walk to push across the first run of the game and then the Outlaws got a second run on a passed ball to give them a 2-0 lead that they would hold.

Brian Kroll threw a complete game shutout on 130 pitches to gut out a classic pitchers duel for the Chico Outlaws. Chico now holds a 2.5 game lead over Fullerton going into the last week of the season.

Jeff Groeger threw a gem for the Flyers into the 8th inning, including taking a no-hitter into the 6th inning. He left the bases loaded in the 8th inning and was relieved by Wes Faust.

Faust got Mike Mallory to line out to left to preserve the scoreless tie.

With one out in the top of the 9th, Jason Van Meetren singled and then Todd Gossage doubled to left to put runners at second and third. Jim Wallace walked to load the bases.

Jesse Kovacs then eyed his way to an RBI, which incensed Wes Faust, who immediately began arguing with the home plate umpire. Faust uncorked an 0-2 pitch to Alex Froloff that Morales could not handle to score Gossage from third.

Wes Faust, Charlie Hough and Jerry Turner were ejected from the game in the 9th inning.

The Flyers went quietly in the bottom of the 9th inning.

The Flyers had two great chances to score in the game. They had runners at the corners with one out in the 7th inning and Buddy Morales fouled out to first base.

They also had three hits in the 2nd inning, but a double play groundout by Hector Zamora hurt that rally.

Desi Wilson broke Groeger's no-hitter in the 6th inning.

The Flyers have a day off and then travel to Long Beach for a four-game series next week.
