SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Johnstown Riverhawks used five touchdown passes from rookie Waylon Davis and a pair of second-half defensive touchdowns on their way to a 51-16 win over Syracuse on Sunday night.

Davis hooked up three times with Marko Thomas and twice with Quenteen Robinson to help Johnstown to a runaway win and a 2-0 record.

Even with Davis' heroics, it was the Johnstown defense that put away a game Soldiers squad (0-2) in the third quarter.

With Johnstown leading 23-10 in the third, cornerback Carlos Campbell returned an interception off of Syracuse's Doby Howard and raced 36 yards to the end zone. On the Soldiers' next possession, Ian Hale picked off a Rychard Dykes pass on a botched field goal try and returned it 13 yards to give Johnstown a 37-10 lead.

Johnstown put the game under wraps on their next possession when Davis hooked up with Robinson on a 15-yard touchdown strike and a 44-10 lead after three quarters. Davis connected with Thomas early in the fourth for Johnstown's final touchdown. Kicker Josh Telenko booted the ensuing kickoff through the uprights to cement Syracuse's fate. The Soldiers set the final on their next possession as Joel Patrick hauled in a 20-yard pass from Howard midway through the fourth.

In the first quarter Davis threw a pair of 30-yard touchdowns - one each to Robinson and Thomas - to help build a 15-7 lead after one. Thomas then hauled in a 13-yard pass from Davis in the second and followed with a two-point conversion catch to give Johnstown a 13-point cushion at the half.

Syracuse got on the board in the first when Joel Patrick pulled in a pass from Chris Bresnahan that covered 44 yards. The Soldiers inched closer with Dallas Pelz's 27-yard field goal in the second.

Johnstown heads home for its home opener on Friday, welcoming Huntingdon to the Cambria County War Memorial Arena. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
