LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks have parted ways with one of their primary infielders.

Rockford's professional baseball team announced Wednesday it has traded David Cooper to the Gary SouthShore RailCats of the independent American Association in exchange for pitcher Jeremy Hauer. Cooper batted .247 with three home runs and 34 RBI in 93 games last season. He also set single-season team records in stolen bases (42) and sacrifice hits (16).

Cooper joined the RiverHawks in 2010, but missed the second half of the season due to hand surgery. As a result, he played in just 34 games. At the time of the injury, Cooper was on a 22-game on-base streak.

Cooper, 26, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2008. He spent two years in the Diamondbacks farm system, reaching as a high as the Class High A Visalia Rawhide of the California League.

Hauer, 24, went 2-1 with a 3.65 earned-run average in 43 appearances and three starts for Gary last season. He began his pro career in 2009 with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the now-defunct independent Northern League. The lefthander spent nearly two seasons with Fargo before joining the RailCats in 2010.

An Illinois native, Hauer is entering his fourth professional season. He holds a 3-6 career record with a 4.86 earned-run average in 79 games and 10 starts.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league that will play its 20th season in 2012. Advertising and season ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
