ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces have agreed to terms on one-year deals with forwards Kimbi Daniels and John Ronan for the 2005-06 season.
Daniels becomes the seventh Ace to suit up at least six years in an Alaska uniform, joining Dean Larson and Paul Williams (eight years each) as well as Kord Cernich, Chad Richard, Sean Rowe, and Keith Street (six years each). He already ranks fourth on the Aces all-time list in games played (312) and penalty minutes (620) and fifth in both points (293) and assists (178). The 32-year-old Daniels struggled at times during the regular season but still notched the 600th point of his pro career with a goal March 23 against Las Vegas before coming alive in the playoffs, finishing third on the team with 10 points despite appearing in only 11 of Alaska's 15 postseason contests. He scored three goals in the conference finals against Trenton and sealed the West Finals sweep of Long Beach with an empty-netter April 25.
Originally a third round pick of Philadelphia in the 1990 NHL Draft, Daniels scored one goal in 27 games for the Flyers after leading Swift Current to the 1989 Memorial Cup and was named Most Valuable Player of the title game. He also represented Canada at the 1992 World Junior championships and later helped lead Charlotte to the 1996 ECHL title and Hamilton to the 1997 AHL Calder Cup Finals.
The 25-year-old Ronan, a 5-10, 202-pounder out of Braintree, Mass., joined Alaska last April fresh out of the University of Maine, where he was a teammate of Aces winger Chris Heisten for two years and helped lead the Black Bears to the NCAA Final in 2004. Ronan appeared in the final two regular season games for the Aces after scoring a career high 20 points (11g-9a) in his senior year at Maine.
The Aces open the 2005-06 regular season Friday, October 21 against the San Diego Gulls at 7:15 p.m. in Sullivan Arena after a pair of pre-season games at home against the Dayton Bombers October 12-13 (also 7:15 starts). Alaska advanced to Game Seven of the National Conference Finals last year after winning its first ever division title with a 45-19-8 record during the regular season.
