West Texas Roughnecks News Release
ODESSA, TX. With entertainment being such an important part of the Roughnecks product, few things excited fans more than the dance team in 2004. For the second time in as many seasons, the Odessa Roughnecks and SHOUT Cheerleading will team up to bring the most talented dancers in the Permian Basin together to entertain Roughnecks fans year-round. On Saturday, February 26th at 3:00 PM at the Midland Park Mall will be the 2005 Odessa Roughnecks Dance Team Auditions. This Saturday event will be preceded by two days of open clinics at the SHOUT studio in Odessa on business 80. Thursday and Friday will offer the chance for the hopeful ladies to register, learn the audition routine, ask questions and learn about the Roughnecks Dance Team. From 6:00 until 8:00 PM on those nights the owner/choreographer, Welton Blaylock, will be on hand to supervise the clinics and teach the routine.
"It is a big commitment becoming a professional dancer," Blaylock stated about the Roughnecks dance squad, "You are paid to become a local celebrity which is wonderful, but only the young ladies who are ready to work hard and become part of a true team should audition."
SHOUT cheerleading was the official dance studio of the Odessa Roughnecks during the 2004 season. The studio choreographed the dances for every game and appearance as well as assisting the dancers in uniforms, hip-hop dance classes, aerobics classes, tumbling and balance. Blaylock is an 18 year vet in the instructional dance and cheer business. Before he began teaching, he earned an All-American status for cheer and dance while representing Texas Tech in Lubbock. Blaylock and his studio also serve in a cheerleading consulting capacity with UTPB along with both Odessa and Permian High Schools. Additionally, Blaylock has choreographed the dance routines in several local plays as well as for various artists on the Sony Record label. "We are extremely pleased that Welton is spearheading this important part of our business again this season," explained team Public Relations Director Abby Benizio, "He is great to work with and we are certain that he will once again produce one of the top dance teams in the league."
Training Camp begins this Saturday with players reporting on Thursday and Friday. Coach Chris Williams has scheduled his introductory team meeting for this Friday evening and members of the media should be looking for details and an invitation to this special, closed to the public, presentation. Further information on these topics along with season ticket and corporate partnership details can be obtained by calling (432) 332-PASS (7277) or by logging onto the team's website at www.RoughnecksNIFL.com.
