Matt Moffat Wins Section 102 Impact Player Award
On Saturday, March 3rd, prior to the opening faceoff of tonight's Federal Hockey League game at the Danbury Ice Arena, first year Danbury Whalers forward Matt Moffat was presented with The Section 102 Impact Player of The Year Award.
In a brief ceremony at center ice, Moffat was presented with a trophy by Section 102 representatives, Dennis "Big D Cats" Cartalano, Anthony "Baloo" Raemdonck, Mike "Mikey V" Velluto, and Steve "Jackass" Swain in commemoration of his achievement. Moffat's name has also been added to the perpetual trophy, alongside those of past award winners.
"Matt has been one of the most exciting players to wear a Whalers sweater this season," Raemdonck said. According to Velluto, "There is no doubt that he is a Section 102 favorite."
Cartolano, who handled the vote tally and the trophy logistics, reports that Moffat's selection for the Impact Player was decided by the slimmest of margins. Moffat's stats for the 2010-2011 Whalers campaign are impressive. The Cambridge, Ontario native leads Danbury with a + 22 rating and 55 points. Although he is second in games played (44) and tied for 4th in goals (16), his team leading 39 assists make him that dynamic presence that the Whalers could rely on the entire season.
When asked about the origins of the award, Swain says the award has its roots in New Haven, with an end of season ritual that initiated with Section 14 in the venerable New Haven Veterans Memorial Coliseum. "We brought the award over from Section 14 and the fans from Section 102 have carried on the tradition by funding, voting for, and presenting the award every season that pro hockey has been played in Danbury," says Swain. Past award winners were Kenzie Homer (New Haven Knights), Blair Allison (New Haven Knights), Bruce Richardson (Danbury Trashers), JM Daoust (Danbury Trashers), and Obi Aduba (Danbury Mad Hatters), Alec Kirschner (Danbury Whalers).
The Danbury Whalers are proud to announce that forward #12 Alex Goupil will retun to the lineup this weekend when the Whalers are in Brooklyn and at home on Saturday against the Federals.
