DANBURY, Connecticut - Alec Kirschner scored two goals and Nick Neidert stopped 31shots he faced to lead the Danbury Whalers over the Brooklyn Aviators, 3-1, at the Danbury Ice Arena in Federal Hockey League action on Wednesday night.
Brooklyn has now lost two straight, with both defeats coming to the hands of the Whalers. Greg Holt chipped in with two helpers for Danbury in the contest as well.
Neither team was able to register a goal in the first period, as both teams put up 10 shots in the frame. Brooklyn held the slight edge offensively with two power plays, however the club was unable to find the back of the net.
Chris Seifert opened the scoring for Danbury (4-3-0) in the second period with his fifth marker of the season just :49 into the stanza. Seifert buried the puck far side over the glove of Aviators netminders Tommy Lee to give the Whalers a 1-0 lead. Kirschner picked up his first of the season for Danbury, in his first game, after returning from Elmira of the ECHL at the 13:45 mark. He then gave Danbury a 3-0 edge on his second of the year with 4:57 left on a one-timer from the slot got past the glove of Lee.
Jarrett Rush put the Aviators on the board late in the third with his first goal of the season to make it 3-1, however it was not enough as Danbury held on for the win.
Neidert picked up his third win of the season, while Lee made 32 stops in the losing effort for Brooklyn.
The Brooklyn Aviators return home on Friday night to take on the Cape Cod Bluefins at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.
