Dallas Wings News Release
Arlington, Texas - The Dallas Wings have acquired center Teaira McCowan from the Indiana Fever, the team announced today. The Wings will also receive the seventh overall selection in the 2022 WNBA Draft and the Chicago Sky's first-round selection in the 2023 WNBA Draft, which was previously acquired by Indiana. In return, the team has sent Indiana their two first-round selections, fourth and sixth, in the 2022 WNBA Draft and their first-round selection in the 2023 WNBA Draft.
"Teaira is one of the most dominant, young post players in the WNBA today," Dallas Wings President & CEO Greg Bibb stated. "We are fortunate to add a player of her caliber to our team. Her size and skill will help solidify our interior post presence as we continue to build our talented roster."
McCowan set numerous career-highs in 2021, as she averaged 11.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. Her 9.6 rebounds were the third-best average in the WNBA, and she was also the fifth leading shot blocker. Over the last three seasons, McCowan has recorded 28 double-doubles, which is the third most in the league, only behind Connecticut's Jonquel Jones (33) and Minnesota's Sylvia Fowles (31). She also set an Indiana Fever single-season record with 308 total rebounds in 2021, breaking her own record, which she set in her rookie year in 2019 with 305 total rebounds. She is one of 12 players to average at least 10 points and at least seven rebounds in her first three seasons, and one of just three players to do it in the past three seasons. McCowan's scoring average has increased all three years into her WNBA career, after being selected third overall in the 2019 WNBA Draft. She attended Mississippi State University and was a two-time First-Team All-American and led her team to the national title game in both 2017 and 2018. McCowan was also named SEC Player of the Year as a senior in 2019 and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019. McCowan is originally from Brenham, Texas.
McCowan is currently playing overseas for OGM Ormanspor in Turkey, where she is averaging 20.4 points and 13.8 rebounds in the KBSL and 21.9 points and 14.9 rebounds in 10 EuroCup games.
The team will announce plans for a media availability to discuss the trade at a future date.
