Dallas Desperados Introduce 'Impact Player' Program
February 13, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Dallas Desperados News Release
After a successful 2-0 start to the 2003 season, the Dallas Desperados Arena Football team will kick off the inaugural season of the "Dallas Desperados Impact Player Program" with the first of 15 appearances at Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. The first appearance is scheduled for Monday, February 17 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the John B. O'Hara Building, the Mesquite (TX) branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs. The "Impact Player Program" was designed to allow the Dallas Desperados arena football team players and coaches an opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of children in the Dallas area. Throughout the Desperados season, select players and coaches will make appearances at one or more of the 10 Boys & Girls Clubs locations on Monday evenings through June 2nd (excluding May 26 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday).
The program enables players to spend time with youth participating in the Boys & Girls Clubs after school program on a regular basis as they partake in activities designated by each Club Director, including: tutoring, coaching sports (primarily basketball), social recreation activities, mentoring, rap-sessions, reading to children and arts & craft projects. The "Impact Player Program" will also help the Desperados players gain confidence in their ability to interact with the community as professional athletes and role models.
The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs is to inspire and empower all youth, with special concern for those from disadvantaged circumstances, to achieve their full potential in a positive, safe and fun environment. Boys & Girls Clubs are open to all boys and girls between the ages of six and 18, regardless of race, religion or national origin. The 10 Greater Dallas Clubs annually serve more than 9,000 youth. Based on physical, emotional, cultural and social needs, and the interests of boys and girls, Clubs offer diverse program activities in five areas: Character and Leadership Development, Education and Career Development, Health and Life Skills, The Arts and Sports, Fitness and Recreation.
