April 18, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - D.J. Mitchell (WP, 2-0) and Cole DeVries (LP, 0-1) locked up in a pitcher's duel at Frontier Field in Rochester on Wednesday with both pitchers taking a shutout into the sixth inning. Mitchell's shutout continued to the seventh, while DeVries' came to an end on Steve Pearce's two RBI single as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (5-8) snapped a three game losing streak with a 2-0 shutout win over the Rochester Red Wings (7-7).
Pearce's two RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning got the Yankees on the board off DeVries who had scattered three hit prior to the three he allowed in the sixth. Ramiro Pena slashed a single back up the middle to open the inning but looked as if he would be stranded until a pair of two out hits put the Yankees out in front 2-0. Dewayne Wise doubled off the glove of right fielder Ben Revere who just missed making a diving catch in the right field corner. With runners at second and third base Pearce singled to center off DeVries scoring both Pena and Wise for a 2-0 Yankees lead.
Mitchell made the lead stand up with the longest starting effort for a SWB starting pitcher going 8.0 innings allowing two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. The Red Wings got a runner as far as second base against Mitchell just twice on the night as he retired the final 11 Rochester batters he faced.
Kevin Whelan closed out the Wings with a one-two-three top of the ninth inning for his second save of the season.
DeVries was the tough luck loser for Rochester allowing the two Yankees runs in the sixth inning. The right hander went 7.0 innings giving up seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester Red Wings wrap up their four game series Thursday night at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York against the Red Wings with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Right hander Adam Warren (1-1, 7.45 ERA) makes the start for the Yankees, while Rochester will counter with right hander Samuel Deduno (0-0, 3.27 ERA).
