D-Backs Announce 2013 Aces Coaching Staff

RENO, Nev.-After guiding the Reno Aces to their first-ever Pacific Coast League Championship and Triple-A National Championship in 2012, former Major League All-Star Brett Butler will return as manager of the club in 2013, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced today.

The Aces' coaching staff will be rounded out by returning Pitching Coach Mike Parrott and newcomer Hitting Coach Greg Gross. Athletic Trainer Joe Metz returns for his second-straight season. Strength and Conditioning Coach Mike Schofield will come to Reno for the first time.

Reno is coming off its most successful season in club history, finishing with an 81-63 record in addition to the league and Triple-A Championships. The Aces spent 105 days in 1st place in 2012-including sole possession of 1st for 96-straight games to finish the regular season. Excluding Major League Rehabilitation Assignments, 21 members of the Aces appeared in the big leagues in 2012, including nine who made their Major League debut.

The 2013 season marks Butler's ninth in the Arizona organization and his seventh as a manager in the D-backs chain. He has served as Reno's only manager since the creation of the franchise in 2009. In Baseball America's 2011 "Best Tools" issue, Butler was tabbed as the PCL's Best Managerial Prospect. A veteran of 17 Major League seasons, Butler helped lead the San Francisco Giants to the 1989 National League pennant, and later he was a National League All-Star in 1991 as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Parrott was a first-round selection of the Baltimore Orioles in 1973 and would go on to spend five seasons in the big leagues. In 1979, Parrott ranked 10th in the American League with 13 complete games on his way to being named Seattle Mariners Pitcher of the Year. The 2013 season will be Parrot's 17th with the Diamondbacks organization and 12th-straight as Arizona's Triple-A pitching coach.

Gross was a fourth-round selection of the Houston Astros in 1970 and went on to spend 17 seasons in the big leagues. A career .287 batter, he also spent time in the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies organizations. Gross, who has over 19 years of professional coaching experience, served as hitting coach for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2001-04 and 2010-12.

Metz returns to Reno for his second-straight Triple-A assignment. Prior to joining the Aces last season, Metz climbed the ladder from Rookie Missoula to Double-A Mobile in the D-backs' organization. During the 2010 offseason, he worked as the athletic trainer for the San Juan Senadores of the Puerto Rico Winter League.

Schofield will make his Triple-A debut as the fourth strength and conditioning coach in Aces franchise history. Prior to his assignment in Reno, Schofield worked in the D-backs organization with Rookie-Missoula and Single-A South Bend. A native of Parker, Colorado, Schofield graduated from Colorado State University.
