San Jose CyberRays News Release
SAN JOSE (Feb. 27, 2003) â San Jose CyberRays captain Brandi Chastain has been called up to the U.S. Women's National Team for next month's Algarve Cup.
The 12-team annual tournament March 14-20 in southern Portugal is the most important event on the international women's soccer calendar outside the World Cup and Olympic Games, and this year it is a tune-up for the World Cup beginning Sept. 23 in China.
Chastain has 123 caps for the national team and has appeared in two previous World Cups and two Olympics.
The United States has been placed in the four-team Group A for round-robin play against Canada, Sweden and arch-rival Norway, the world's only team with a winning record against the Americans. In Group B, the other group in championship contention, are China, Denmark, France and Finland. The four teams in Group C â Portugal, Ireland, Wales and Greece â are playing for ninth through 12th places.
