San Diego Spirit News Release

SAN DIEGO - U.S. Women's National Team head coach April Heinrichs has named the 20 players who will travel to Portugal on March 7 to participate in the 10th Algarve Cup, the most prestigious invitational women's tournament in the world, which is being held from March 14-20, 2003, at 12 small venues on the scenic Southern coast of Portugal. The Spirit will be represented on the U.S. roster by Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy, Shannon MacMillan and Aly Wagner. The Algarve Cup is perhaps the world's most competitive women's international event outside of the Women's World Cup, the Olympics and the European Championship. For the second time, the tournament will feature 12 teams, up from eight that played for the title in the Algarve region of Portugal for the first eight years of the competition. The USA was drawn into Group A, which looks to be the most difficult of the three groups, and will face regional rival Canada, Olympic champion Norway and European runner-up Sweden in first-round play. All three teams have qualified for the 2003 Women's World Cup in China. The USA will open the Algarve Cup on Friday, March 14 against Canada, face Norway on Sunday, March 16, and finish first-round play against Sweden on Tuesday, March 18. The placement games will take place on Thursday, March 20, making for a grueling schedule of four games in seven days. The four Spirit players will miss 10 days of Spring Training to participate in the tournament. San Diego begins training camp on March 1 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., their new practice home.
