New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters have added two more arms to their pitching staff in veteran Nick Maness and rookie John Magaletti and have signed middle infielder Keith Stegbauer, the 2004 Northeast League Player of the Year while at Central Connecticut State.
Maness, a righthanded starter with significant Class AA and AAA experience, is expected to be a key member of the rotation. His last full season was 2002 when he started 29 games for the New York Mets' top two farm clubs at Norfolk and Binghamton, compiling a record of 7-9 with an earned run average of 4.39.
"We expect him to be in the form he was in in 2002," said Cutters Manager Mike Church. "He should bring leadership to the pitching staff and to the clubhouse."
The 6-3, 210-pound Tallahassee, FL resident was selected by the Mets in the 12th round of the 1997 draft. He spent six years in their organization before joining Camden of the Atlantic League in 2003. He pitched only briefly in 2004, appearing in six games for the Aces of the then Northeast League.
An eight-year professional, Maness has a career record of 38-45 and an ERA of 4.46. He has appeared in 162 games, making 129 starts. His best year came in 2000 while he was with St. Lucie of the Florida State League. He posted 11 wins, good enough for fourth best in the league, to go along with the fifth lowest ERA at 3.22.
Stegbauer played last season for Central Connecticut State University. He played second base at CCSU but can also play shortstop. He brings with him a resumé full of collegiate records and accolades.
In 2004, he led the Northeast Conference in batting average (.436), hits (95) and runs (76) --the latter two both school and league records--on his way to being unanimously selected as conference Player of the Year. His 1.46 runs scored per game was the best in the country and his .436 batting average was the sixth best in Division I.
Magaletti, who is from Scarsdale, NY, was primarily an infielder while playing for Brown University. Most of his pitching has come since that time, earning him tryouts with various major league organizations this spring. He struck out 59, allowed only 23 hits and posted a 1.59 earned run average in 39 innings last summer in the semi-pro Westchester Rockland Wood Bat League.
