Cutters Quest for Championship Starts Wednesday
September 6, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters are one of four teams remaining with Can-Am League championship aspirations as the postseason begins Wednesday night. The Cutters travel to Worcester to take on the Tornadoes for the first two games of the best of five series. Both contests at Fitton Field (Wednesday and Thursday) have 7:05 p.m. start times.
The series shifts to Yale Field on Friday. Game three is slated to start at 7:05 p.m. with the fourth and fifth games being played, if necessary, at 7:05 p.m. Saturday and 2:05 p.m. Sunday. The Cutters took three of four at home against Worcester during the final weekend of the regular season.
Tickets for the divisional series are $7, $9 or $13 and can be purchased through www.CuttersBaseball.com, over the phone at 203-777-5636 or by visiting the Yale Field box office. Yale students and faculty can buy $5 tickets if they present their school identification.
Consistent production from a number of players helped the Cutters to a 28-18 second half record. First baseman Bill Peavey led New Haven County in the Triple Crown categories: batting average (.331), home runs (15) and runs batted in (71). He is joined in the lineup by a pair of sluggers who each drove in more than 60 runs, Jeff Brooks (64) and Derrick Gibson (62). Gibson was honored Monday as Cutters Player of the Year, as voted on by the fans.
The Pitcher of the Year award, also decided by the Yale Field faithful, was given to Rolando Valles. After a slow start to the season, Valles was the Cutters' best starter for the second half, winning seven out of nine decisions to bring his overall record to 9-6. His 125.1 innings were third most in the league.
Worcester will be a formidable opponent for the Cutters. Even though New Haven County was victorious in the final regular season series, the Tornadoes hold a 9-6 head to head advantage over the Cutters this season. Led by 10-game winner Reid Willett (10-4) and the power of Andy Brown (21 home runs), the first-year franchise finished the season with an overall record of 50-42.
Should the Cutters advance to the championship series, they will meet either Les Quebec Capitales or the Brockton Rox, beginning away from home on September 13.
