New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters scraped, clawed and battled through nine innings and then some against the North Shore Spirit, eventually snatching an 8-7 victory by way of Chas Terni's walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 12th inning. It was the Cutters second walk-off home run of the series and an important win, as it maintained their two and a half game lead over the Worcester Tornadoes in the South Division.
At one point, the Cutters were down to their final four outs. Trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth, Derrick Gibson launched his 12th four-bagger of the year, a deep two-run drive that disappeared into the night sky. The lead was short lived, though.
In their final at bat, the Spirit managed to force the game into extra frames. Rob Fischer would score the tying run on a Travis Oglesby double. It was the second two-base hit for the Spirit's catcher, who also belted his 18th homer.
The bats for both teams suddenly went quiet upon entering extra innings. The Cutters' Mark Comolli and Spirit's Alex Herrera each pitched at least three innings of scoreless relief. But because of substitution earlier in the game that eliminated their designated hitter, the pitcher for the Spirit was forced bat. Instead of sending Herrera to the plate, North Shore sent hurler Peter Soteropoulos to hit, who was retired by Comolli. He stayed in to pitch the bottom of the inning and served up the game winning hit to Terni.
The top of the order did the majority of the damage for the Cutters. Gibson and Terni were especially deadly. In addition to their home runs, Gibson drove in five runs, scoring three of his own and Terni rapped out for hits, also scoring three times.
The Spirit's offense was led by Oglesby. He had four hits of his own and drove in a pair of runs. Angel Valdez and Marcos Agramonte each added a pair of ribbies of their own.
Thursday?s starting pitchers each ran into early trouble. John Kelly of North Shore failed in his attempt to win his 11th game of the year, tossing five innings and surrendering five earned runs. The Cutters starter Brad Whitwort had to leave the game before the start of the fourth inning after injuring his groin during his warm-up pitches. He allowed four earned runs in the first three innings.
The win gives the Cutters the 2-1 series victory. They head to New Jersey to play the Jackals for three games, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday. Tim Keinath (3-5) and Courtney Hall (5-3) will pitch for New Haven County.
